Audubon has been committed to a world where people and wildlife thrive since 1905. We took on the challenge of revamping their app, creating a more engaging user experience that drove up both downloads and donations.
The app relied on legacy APIs, outdated data, and a tangled codebase, making it hard to deliver a user-friendly experience. UI inconsistencies and dead ends in the user journey added to the frustration. Despite its good intentions, the app felt outdated and confusing. A modernization was needed to make it enjoyable and efficient for users.
After diving into the existing setup, we realized that making the app all about the user was essential. Audubon serves a special purpose: when users spot a bird in the wild, they don’t have time to waste. With this insight in mind, we aimed to create a super intuitive app that puts all the information right at their fingertips. Every design choice was made with intention, prioritizing functionality over aesthetics.
Our two-year partnership with Audubon focused on refining the app after its initial redesign, expanding on the initial setup.
The home screen has been updated to enhance access to important features. Users can now find a larger Bird ID button in the bottom left for quick identification of unfamiliar birds, while the new search button in the bottom right simplifies the process of accessing the Field Guide. Birding statistics are prominently showcased at the top, and every time the app is opened, users will be greeted with a highlighted North American species, offering insights into each of these amazing birds.
Then enhanced bird identification process makes it easier than ever to recognize a recently spotted bird. Users can input their observations, including details like color, size, and tail characteristics, and Bird ID will generate a list of possible matches in real time, tailored to the user's location and date.
Browsing sightings and hotspots has never been easier thanks to the new list drawer feature. When viewing hotspots or recent sightings of a specific species in the Field Guide, users can easily slide the list down to focus on the map or pull it up to explore the complete list of sightings and hotspots.
The Sightings section enables users to log every bird they encounter, whether hiking, relaxing on the porch, or observing from a window, while maintaining an updated life list automatically. Additionally, the comprehensive field guide features over 3,000 photos, more than eight hours of audio clips of songs and calls, detailed multi-season range maps, and expert insights from renowned North American bird expert Kenn Kaufman.
