Hi, I’m Gordan, and I’m a software engineer at Pixion.

I was seeking a role that would push my limits and foster growth, and Pixion delivered just that. Since joining in January 2021, I’ve had the opportunity to tackle challenging projects that have sharpened my skills and allowed me to collaborate with an incredible team. It’s been truly rewarding to witness the progress and impact of my work over time.

In this post, I’ll share my experience at Pixion, revealing more about our work and culture, and a bit about my life outside of work.

My Pixion Story
Copied!

My onboarding was a bit peculiar since I joined when the company was young, and we still didn't have an office space. I was recruited by a former colleague who told me about the company’s relaxed atmosphere and a project that sounded like the perfect challenge. At the time, I was looking for an opportunity to improve my SQL skills, and Pixion seemed like the perfect fit. It offered me the chance to jump right in with familiar tech while working on my weaknesses.

Pixion elements I like the most

There’s a lot I enjoy about working at Pixion. One of the things I appreciate most is the atmosphere of working on an in-house product. Even though Pixion operates as an agency, I’ve always felt like I was part of something long-term and impactful.

As a full stack software engineer, I work across a wide range of technologies, from building mobile and web applications to managing server infrastructure and optimizing databases. My responsibilities include implementing new features, reviewing code, collaborating with QA, and ensuring smooth performance across the board.

Aside from the work, the team atmosphere is great too. I love our Wednesday coffee time – it’s when the team gathers to talk about coding obstacles and collaborate on solutions. And of course, the social side of things is always fun – from our Halloween pumpkin carving contests to team-building escapes. Goc and Marin

Technology, oh my mighty friend!
Copied!

My day-to-day work involves a variety of technologies. I primarily work in VS Code, writing React and Node.js in TypeScript. A typical day also involves reviewing code on GitHub and coordinating with the QA team to ensure everything runs smoothly.

SQL, once a great unknown is now a familiar ally while churning through data, with Postgres being the flavour of choice, especially when it comes to handling complex data. iTerm is my preferred terminal where I run a grid of 6 panels which is usually enough for me. Docker makes my local infrastructure environment simple to run with a single command so I don't have to worry about running and updating my databases, queuing engines and Redis.

Professional development at Pixion

One thing I really appreciate about Pixion is the emphasis on professional development. For example, on Thursdays we gather for in-house presentations that keep us in the loop. Team members share their findings on new tools, frameworks, or technologies they’ve been exploring. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to get their toes wet and enjoy a summarised overview with the ability to ask questions and engage with the presenter.

Additionally, Pixion provides each employee with a dedicated conference budget, which keeps us from fusing with our chairs and giving the opportunity to travel and learn. I love attending conferences, it lets you discover cutting-edge technology & trends and network, as well as getting some sightseeing, exploring different cultures and tasting new beers.

Extracurricular activities I practice
Copied!

When I’m not coding, I’m usually staying active or indulging in my hobbies. Used to be a frequent runner before winter came, but now I’m looking for comfier indoor alternatives, probably some form of calisthenics, might even be swimming in my local pool.

It will be good to get back to a routine after lazy hibernation mode during the winter holidays.

In addition to physical activities, I’m also a huge Magic: The Gathering player. If you have an interesting deck, feel free to challenge me!

Also, usually I bake some cakes for my birthday and share with my colleagues, if they behave.

Most non-professional screen time I spend on…

You'd think that as a software engineer my free screen time is spent playing video games and you'd be absolutely right because stereotypes exist for a reason.

Currently I'm enjoying Hades because there's nothing quite like an RNG powered roguelike to rot away my primate brain.

If you’re looking for a TV show recommendation, What We Do in the Shadows is a proper chuckle fest. It’s a hilarious mockumentary-style show about vampires trying to live in the modern world.

Final Thougts
Copied!

Overall, my time at Pixion has been a journey of building, learning and growing, both professionally and personally. I’ve had the chance to work on meaningful projects, develop new skills, and connect with amazing people. Whether it’s solving complex technical challenges or collaborating on team activities, I’m happy to be a part of the Pixion crew.
